Far-left state lawmaker Angie Nixon has defeated retired Army Lt. Col. Alex Vindman in the Florida Democratic special Senate primary election. The Associated Press called the race for Nixon on Tuesday night with more than 80% of ballots counted, as she held a 55.2% to 44.8% lead over Vindman.

Vindman, who served as a key witness in former President Donald Trump's first impeachment trial, was seeking the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate. Nixon, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, will now advance to the general election in November to challenge incumbent Republican Senator Ashley Moody.

Moody secured her party's nomination by winning the GOP Senate primary with nearly 80% of the vote. The winner of the November contest will serve the remainder of the six-year term to which Marco Rubio was elected in 2022.
