CNN host Anderson Cooper highlighted a perceived hypocrisy in Donald Trump's stance on foreign gifts, particularly concerning the reported upcoming transfer of a new Air Force One aircraft from Qatar to Trump's presidential library.
Cooper recalled Trump's strong criticisms during the 2016 presidential election campaign, when he frequently attacked Democratic rival Hillary Clinton over donations made to the Clinton Foundation by Qatar and Saudi Arabia. Cooper played a clip of Trump from a 2016 debate, where he asserted that such donations "certainly did not look good."
During the same period, Trump also spoke about his own political donations, boasting in 2015 about the access he gained from contributing to politicians. Cooper noted that at the time, Trump's openness about seeking future favors through donations was viewed by some as candid. However, Cooper contrasted this with the current situation, where Trump is reportedly set to receive a gift valued significantly higher than any contributions he himself ever made. Cooper suggested that Trump now wants to be seen as distinct from the politicians he once criticized for accepting such gifts.
