Anders Lee, who spent 14 seasons with the New York Islanders and served as their captain, is adapting to a significant career shift after signing a three-year deal with the Utah Mammoth. The move marks a departure from his long tenure on Long Island, where he became a consistent presence.

Lee, who wore No. 27 for the Islanders, has switched to No. 72 for his new team. He acknowledged the change, stating, "It's a big change, there's no doubt about it." However, he expressed growing comfort with the Mammoth's jersey and logo in the weeks following his decision. Lee's departure in free agency alters the immediate landscape for the Islanders.

The decision to move on stemmed from differing contract term expectations between Lee and Islanders general manager Mathieu Darche. Despite the Islanders improving their offer before free agency opened, Lee opted to explore the market. Darche indicated support for Lee's decision, noting, "I'm actually happy for Anders that he got his term that he wanted and the money he wanted."

Lee, who recorded 19 goals and 42 points last season, described his playing style to reporters in Utah, emphasizing his ability to create "havoc" for goaltenders and score "dirty" goals, a style he expects to carry over to the Mammoth. His previous playoff experience includes reaching the Eastern Conference Final with the Islanders in 2020.

Vincent Trocheck, a former Rangers center who was traded to Utah on the same day Lee signed, commented on his new teammate, calling him a "pain in the ass" to play against. Lee cited the Mammoth's competitive window as a key factor in his decision, stating, "These guys, their window's coming up, and it's open. That was a big part of the fit for me, wanting to come to a team that has an opportunity to win."

The Islanders, meanwhile, appear to be positioning themselves for potential roster changes in the summers of 2027 and 2028, with current contracts structured for flexibility.
