As trade tensions escalate between the United States and Canada, a significant majority of Americans believe the U.S. should be open to reaching a compromise, even if it means not all of its demands are met. According to an Ipsos poll released Tuesday, nearly 70% of Americans expressed this view.
In contrast, only 25% of Americans surveyed think the U.S. should maintain a firm stance and push for most of its demands to be satisfied in trade negotiations with its northern neighbor.
The poll results come as President Donald Trump has reiterated his accusations that Canada has engaged in unfair trade practices for decades. During a press conference on Wednesday, Trump stated, "Canada has been ripping off the United States for many, many years, for decades, many decades."
When asked about the possibility of resuming talks, the President commented, "It's not constructive. But that's their democracy."
