The sprawling Shakespeare Ranch, located on the eastern shores of Lake Tahoe in Glenbrook, Nevada, has returned to the market with a substantial $63 million price reduction. Originally listed for $188 million in October 2024, the estate's asking price has now been lowered to $125 million, marking a one-third decrease.

Despite the significant cut, the property retains its status as the most expensive residential listing in the United States. The estate is owned by businessman and philanthropist Larry Ruvo, chairman of Southern Glazer’s Wine & Spirits of Nevada. Ruvo has spent years developing the historic ranch into a private compound that combines elements of Old West heritage with modern luxury.

The 126-acre estate is situated in a triple-gated community and features over 425 feet of private shoreline on Lake Tahoe. Amenities include a 465-foot private pier, two boat lifts, 14 private buoys, a boathouse, and multiple guest residences. The property is named after the nearby Shakespeare Rock, a prominent granite formation overlooking the estate.

A Private Luxury Village

The compound comprises 17 residences, including a nearly completed 7,713-square-foot ranch house designed by architect Marc Appleton. This new main residence, not part of the previous offering, is designed to complement the historic character of the ranch while incorporating contemporary luxury. An additional 690-square-foot lakefront cabana, designed by architect Howard Backen, further enhances the connection between the mountain setting and the waterfront.

Listing agents emphasize the estate's unique blend of historical significance and modern amenities. Christine Perry of Christie's International Real Estate Sereno noted that the property, which has operated as a private estate for over 150 years, offers a "mountain-modern lifestyle" alongside its rich heritage.

Extravagant Amenities and Historical Significance

Shakespeare Ranch offers a range of extravagant amenities. Beyond the extensive waterfront features, the grounds include expansive garages, guest houses, horse stables, grazing meadows, and equestrian facilities. An indoor wellness pavilion features a swimming pool and spa. The estate's historic rodeo grounds have served as the site for the annual Glenbrook Rodeo for over 80 years.

Central to the estate's social life is a historic entertainment pavilion, originally built in 1873. This structure, one of the oldest on Lake Tahoe, has been transformed into an entertainment venue with a commercial-grade kitchen, bar, game lounge, dance floor, wine room, and indoor and outdoor entertaining spaces.

The property also grants owners access to Glenbrook's private beach, golf course, tennis facilities, and trail network. The listing agents describe the estate as a rare, once-in-a-generation opportunity, as such large-scale estates can no longer be developed on Lake Tahoe due to strict regulations.

Even with the price reduction, purchasing the ranch remains a significant financial undertaking. At $125 million, the property amounts to approximately $3,571 per square foot. A buyer making a 20 percent down payment would require approximately $25 million in cash, with estimated monthly mortgage payments exceeding $668,000 before taxes, insurance, and maintenance.
