An Amazon cargo jet overshot a runway at Miami International Airport on Sunday, crashing into vehicles and killing five people. The Boeing 767, operating as Prime Air flight 7598 from Puerto Rico, caught fire after colliding with multiple vehicles shortly before 2 p.m. Five individuals in two vehicles were killed, and five others sustained injuries.
The two pilots, identified as Captain Joseph Carroll, 55, and First Officer Felipe Silva Molina, 37, both employed by 21 Air, escaped the incident with minor injuries. One of the pilots, visibly distressed, borrowed a phone from an airport employee to contact his wife. According to witness Abraham Altamar, the pilot, who had a minor head injury, told his wife he was okay but reportedly exclaimed, "My career is over."
Federal investigators are examining whether the aircraft landed too late to stop safely on the runway. NTSB Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy described the scene as "utter devastation."
Miami Dade Fire Rescue officials were on the scene inspecting the wreckage and damaged vehicles. Images from the aftermath showed the damaged jet on its side, with thick black smoke billowing into the sky.
