Alex Rodriguez, a three-time MVP and World Series champion, has revealed the contents of his kitchen refrigerator and pantry, offering a glimpse into his current eating habits five years after retiring from professional baseball. Rodriguez, who played for 25 years, noted that his caloric intake has significantly decreased since his playing days, when he would eat as many as six meals a day.
Rodriguez’s refrigerator typically contains staples such as water, both still and sparkling, eggs, spring lettuce mix, and a variety of fruits including bananas, apples, and oranges, which he considers essential. Fresh, organic blueberries and strawberries are also consistently stocked. He includes greens like salad and broccoli, and keeps hummus on hand for a late-night snack. While he no longer drinks them, he maintains a stash of sodas for visiting friends.
His pantry, however, features a collection of snack items. Rodriguez identified himself as a "chips expert," listing barbecue chips, Doritos, Cheetos, Tostitos, Corn Nuts, and cashews among his favorites, joking that this is where he does his "best work" at 2 a.m. He also admitted to eating in bed.
Rodriguez’s current daily eating routine involves approximately three to four meals, often supplemented by a protein shake. His typical breakfast consists of eggs, oatmeal, bacon, a small glass of orange juice, and plenty of water. For lunch, he usually opts for a salad with chicken or fish. Dinner often features steak or salmon, accompanied by sweet potato fries or other varieties.
He stated that he has never followed a specific diet, emphasizing his enjoyment of food and a positive relationship with it. During his MLB career, he acknowledged "overeating" to fuel his demanding schedule but feels he may "under-eat" now, expressing a need to consume more healthy proteins, fruits, and water.
Certain foods are notably absent from his kitchen, with liver being one item Rodriguez said would never be found there. His go-to pregame meal during his playing career was a peanut butter and jelly sandwich with barbecue chips and two bottles of water. For celebrations of significant wins, he enjoyed a large steak or sushi.
Reflecting his Dominican heritage, Rodriguez’s comfort foods include rice and beans, plátanos maduros, and tostones. While he prefers Burger King burgers, he favors McDonald's French fries. Coffee is a significant part of his daily intake, with an estimated seven to eight cups consumed daily, and he also uses a Celsius energy drink before workouts. His protein shakes are made with protein powder, fruit, and a small amount of peanut butter.
Rodriguez also takes supplements, including vitamin C, a multivitamin, and magnesium for sleep. His preferred ballpark food is a hot dog, specifically a Dodger Dog, and he also enjoys a large, warm pretzel. An unusual favorite combination he has is a peanut butter and jelly sandwich with deli turkey.
In a separate but related initiative, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has launched a new cooking program called 'The Real Food Show.' The program, co-hosted with celebrity chef Andrew Gruel, aims to promote healthy eating habits and address chronic health issues through nutritional education.
