Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has dismissed allegations of impropriety concerning a $6.05 million federal grant awarded to Marrickville Golf Club, a facility located approximately 200 meters from an investment property he owns in Sydney. During a heated parliamentary session, Albanese faced scrutiny from the opposition, which questioned the timing and potential benefit of the taxpayer-funded grant.

Liberal frontbencher Angie Bell directly asked Albanese if the government-funded upgrades had increased the value of his nearby investment property. "The Prime Minister reportedly owns a multi-million dollar investment property just 200 metres away from Marrickville Golf Club, where he holds an undisclosed honorary membership," Bell stated in Parliament.

Albanese strongly refuted any suggestion of personal benefit from the grant. "That wasn't so much a question as a smear. And its imputations are completely false," he responded. He also pointed to the opposition's own election commitments.

The controversy involves funding for upgrades to the Marrickville Golf Club precinct, including improvements to its clubhouse and sewerage infrastructure. This funding was provided through the government's Major and Local Community Infrastructure Program prior to the 2025 federal election.

Further questions were raised regarding an honorary membership previously extended to Albanese by the club. In a subsequent exchange, Albanese announced he had formally declined this membership. "I've written to the Secretary of the Marrickville Golf Club making it clear I decline any honorary membership of the club," he said. He added that he would be willing to pay the standard membership fee should he visit the club in the future.

Records indicate that Albanese still owns a property on Beauchamp Street in Marrickville, purchased in 2006 and now estimated to be worth around $2.6 million. Ownership was transferred solely to him in 2019 following a divorce. The couple had previously owned another property on the same street, which sold for $2.35 million in 2021.

The funding for Marrickville Golf Club has drawn renewed attention following an analysis by the Centre for Public Integrity. This analysis of the government's $560 million Major and Local Community Infrastructure Program found that 73.2 percent of the funding was allocated to Labor-held electorates, compared to 22.6 percent for Coalition seats.

Albanese has consistently denied that his local property holdings or past association with the club influenced the grant decision, asserting that the funding was a legitimate investment in community infrastructure. He characterized the opposition's line of questioning as a politically motivated "smear."
