Ben Affleck and his brother Casey Affleck made a rare joint appearance on the red carpet at the Venice Film Festival on Tuesday evening. The brothers attended the screening for Casey Affleck's film "Company," appearing together months after the death of their mother and following the recent revelation of their father's passing.
Both actors wore black suits. Ben, 54, opted for a white shirt, while Casey, 51, chose a fully black ensemble. Ben wore suede dress shoes, and Casey sported patent leather shoes.
Casey Affleck revealed earlier on Tuesday that their father, Timothy Affleck, died this year, stating at a press conference that he had "lost" both parents. Their mother, Christine Affleck, previously died on June 2 following a battle with pancreatic cancer. The exact date of Timothy Affleck's death was not specified.
While promoting "Company," which he co-wrote, directed, and stars in, Casey Affleck dedicated the film to his parents. "I really wanted to show this movie to them, and I didn’t get to. I think they would have liked it," he said.
Timothy and his ex-wife Christine are also survived by five grandchildren: Indiana, Violet, Atticus, Fin, and Sam. Christine Affleck's obituary noted that her grandchildren were the "animating force of her last two decades." She had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in December and her final wish was to attend her grandson's high school graduation, which she did in May, dying in her sleep days later.
Timothy Affleck largely stayed out of the public eye but appeared in Casey's 2010 mockumentary "I'm Still Here." In 2018, he defended his sons against sexual harassment allegations, telling Grazia that Hollywood had taken a toll on them and was a factor in Ben Affleck's past struggles with alcoholism. He described himself as a "chronic, severe alcoholic" who had recovered and stated that Ben was always serious about sobriety and working toward a balanced life.
Christine Affleck was a graduate of Harvard University and worked as a public school teacher for 35 years until her retirement in 2008. Ben Affleck has spoken of his mother's influence, describing her as having a sharp social consciousness shaped by her elite education and her career in public schools.
