Despite a tumultuous start to his NFL career with the New York Jets, wide receiver Adonai Mitchell is embracing the opportunity to build a connection with veteran quarterback Geno Smith. Mitchell is preparing to work with his fourth starting quarterback since joining the Jets, having played only eight games in the 2025 season.
Mitchell, acquired by the Jets in a midseason trade last year, recorded 24 catches for 301 yards and two touchdowns. Reflecting on his past, he noted a lack of consistent quarterback chemistry even during his college years and his initial 1½ seasons with the Colts, where he played with three different quarterbacks.
However, Mitchell views the quarterback carousel as a challenge he welcomes. He recently spent a week in Florida training with Smith, a 13-year veteran. During this intensive period, Mitchell felt he began to understand Smith's thought process and perception of the game. "Anytime you can get on the same page with the quarterback it will always be great," Mitchell said during training camp. He also believes Smith gained a better understanding of his playing style.
The developing chemistry between Mitchell and Smith will also be crucial as they adapt to new offensive coordinator Frank Reich. Mitchell has spoken with former Colts teammates who played under Reich during his tenure as head coach in Indianapolis from 2018-22. Michael Pittman Jr. reportedly told Mitchell that he would "like him" and described Reich as a "great coach" with a solid plan.
Mitchell expressed his approval of Reich's coaching philosophy, particularly appreciating the freedom he allows receivers on their routes. This sentiment was echoed by running back Breece Hall, who stated that Reich "lets players play off reactions, make the plays their own, make the offense their own."
If Reich's vision for a free-flowing, instinctual offense materializes, the Jets will have a strong receiving corps. Alongside Mitchell, the team boasts three-time 1,000-yard receiver Garrett Wilson, who is returning from a knee injury that sidelined him for the latter half of last season. Rookie Omar Cooper Jr. joins the team after a national championship run at Indiana, and players like Tim Patrick and Isaiah Williams add further depth to the receiving unit. This collection of talent, combined with a solidifying relationship with Smith, could provide Mitchell with the stability he has sought since being drafted 52nd overall in the 2024 NFL Draft.
