The chilling account of actress Melora Rivera's 2014 home invasion has resurfaced, highlighting the prolonged criminal career of the intruder, Christian Hicks, and the legal outcomes that followed. Rivera, then 29, was asleep in her Venice, California, home when Hicks broke in, forcing her to flee onto the roof while a neighbor captured the dramatic scene in a photograph that garnered national attention.
Rivera described the ordeal as feeling like a horror movie. After hearing her front door knob being jiggled, she initially dismissed it. However, Hicks returned and began ramming the door with his shoulder. As the door broke inward, Rivera escaped through her bedroom window and onto the roof, only for Hicks to follow her. A passer-by alerted police, and officers arrived to find Rivera on the roof and Hicks pursuing her. Firefighters provided Rivera with a ladder to descend to safety while police coaxed Hicks down.
At the time of the 2014 incident, Hicks, who had a history of offenses, received a plea deal and was sentenced to three years in prison. However, records indicate that after his release, Hicks continued to engage in criminal activity.
In 2018, he was arrested on charges including burglary and forcible touch, for which he again received a plea deal and a sentence of less than one year. His pattern of offenses escalated in 2021 when he was arrested on charges of rape, sodomy, sexual penetration with force, and kidnapping. Following a lengthy court process, Hicks was sentenced to 37 years in prison in 2023 for these serious crimes, with eligibility for parole in September 2043.
Rivera, who has since become a TV writer and had an acting role in the 2012 film 'Sparkle', recounted the intense fear she experienced. She described seeing Hicks's hand reaching inside to unlock the door after he rammed it, prompting her immediate decision to escape. The entire incident, from the initial break-in to Hicks's apprehension, lasted approximately 30 minutes. Despite the harrowing experience, Rivera managed to take photos during the event.
