Actor Sam Neill, known for his roles in "Jurassic Park" and "Peaky Blinders," has died at the age of 78. His family announced his passing on Monday, stating it was sudden and unexpected, though he died cancer-free. Neill had publicly shared his battle with stage-three blood cancer in 2023 after being diagnosed the previous year. He underwent a costly, cutting-edge CAR T-cell therapy treatment, which led him to announce in April that he was cancer-free.

Neill, a father of four and grandfather of eight, was reportedly surrounded by family at the time of his death. His family released a statement expressing their profound sadness and gratitude to the staff at St. Vincent's Private Hospital in Sydney, Australia, where he passed away.

The actor often spoke about the importance of family. He shared a unique story of reconnecting with his eldest son, Andrew, whom he had given up for adoption in 1969. Neill, in his early twenties at the time, felt he was not capable of fatherhood. After a 25-year separation, he and Andrew actively sought each other out and reunited in 1994. Neill described their reunion as a mature and adult experience, rather than a sentimental one.

By the time of his reunion with Andrew, Neill had three other children. He had son Tim with his first wife, Lisa Harrow, before their divorce in 1989. He married Noriko Watanabe that same year, and they welcomed daughter Elena in 1991. Neill also adopted Watanabe's daughter, Maiko, during their marriage.

Neill had described his family life as "somewhat haphazard" but emphasized his dedication to spending time with his children despite the demands of his career, which often involved travel. He expressed great joy in becoming a grandfather, noting the delight of watching his grandchildren grow. His son Tim reflected on his father's dedication, stating, "There are worse things a dad can do than be off working. He is a good dad. He's a very good dad. He's grandad. Grad, as we call him."
