Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche faced sharp questioning from Democrats during his confirmation hearing Wednesday, defending the Department of Justice against accusations of improper conduct and political motivation.

Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) directly challenged Blanche on several fronts, notably questioning the actions and travel of FBI Director Kash Patel. "How long do you intend to put up with that Kash Patel character?" Whitehouse asked sternly, raising concerns about Patel's airplane trips and suggesting they could be pretexts for personal activities.

Blanche vehemently rejected the insinuations. "It’s absolutely false to suggest that this Department of Justice is not executing as we should and doing the right thing every single day," Blanche retorted. He asserted full confidence in Patel, calling Whitehouse's question "extraordinarily obnoxious."

Whitehouse also presented a stack of papers detailing his requests for Department of Justice files, demanding responses from Blanche. He further raised concerns about indictments that judges had dismissed, implying they were politically motivated.

Blanche countered Whitehouse's points by stating that isolated dismissals do not reflect the hundreds of thousands of indictments and informations filed. He argued that cherry-picking specific judicial comments does not negate the overall integrity of the department's work.

The hearing was marked by a contentious exchange, highlighting ongoing tensions between the administration and congressional Democrats regarding the Justice Department's operations and oversight.
