New York City authorities apprehended Jesus Acosta, a 31-year-old parolee sought by the FBI for two homicides, on Saturday. Acosta was arrested in a Bronx park by the NYPD following a manhunt.
Acosta’s first public comments after his capture were, "God is good, God is great," as he was being led to Bronx Criminal Court. Detectives removed Jesus Acosta, 31, from the 43rd Precinct in the Bronx after his arrest for two shootings.
The killings for which Acosta was wanted occurred within a 48-hour period. On August 23, a married father of two and wings restaurant employee, 44-year-old MD Yousuf, was fatally shot in Brooklyn during a robbery. Yousuf died after being taken to the hospital.
Within two days of the Brooklyn incident, Acosta allegedly shot and killed 33-year-old Tayvon Shuler, a customer at a deli on 149th Street in the Bronx, during another armed robbery. A vigil was later held for Shuler.
There is no indication that these slayings were connected to anything other than robberies. The FBI had offered a $25,000 reward for Acosta's capture, and the United Bodegas of America added a $10,000 reward. Acosta had been released from state prison on April 23, having served 10 years for assault and felony gun possession charges, according to online records.
