NBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar has sharply criticized a letter sent by 11 Republican lawmakers to the WNBA, suggesting their intervention in the treatment of Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark is racially motivated. The lawmakers, led by Rep. August Pfluger of Texas, expressed concern in the letter to WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert that attacks on Clark by opposing players "may be racially motivated."

Abdul-Jabbar addressed the issue on his Substack, calling the lawmakers' claims into question. He noted the racial demographics of the Republican party in the House of Representatives and implied that this was a more likely factor than any alleged racial motivation behind on-court incidents. "My first reaction to this letter was to check the calendar and make sure it wasn’t April Fools’ Day," Abdul-Jabbar wrote. "Clark is white and Thomas is Black, and I guess that was enough for these intrepid lawmakers to decide the play might have been racially motivated."

The letter from the lawmakers followed an incident in late June where Phoenix Mercury player Alyssa Thomas appeared to strike Clark. Thomas was subsequently suspended for one game. Abdul-Jabbar suggested that the lawmakers' letter was itself racially motivated, pointing out that Thomas and her family subsequently received racist abuse online.

The WNBA is expected to respond to the letter by July 24. Representatives for the Indiana Fever stated they were unaware the letter would be sent.

Clark has previously spoken out against opponents receiving racist abuse online, a stance she reiterated after the incident involving Thomas. Clark, who was the first overall pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft, has drawn significant attention and contributed to increased attendance and viewership for the league. The surge in interest has been credited with influencing a new Collective Bargaining Agreement that has led to increased player salaries.

However, Abdul-Jabbar also contested the notion that Clark is the sole "face of the WNBA." He argued that while Clark is a strong player, calling her the league's definitive figure without the "on-court and cross-platform dominance" seen in players like Michael Jordan or LeBron James is an "insult to an awful lot of great players," including multiple MVP winner A'ja Wilson.

Clark is currently in her third WNBA season. Her arrival in the league generated substantial excitement, leading to many Fever games being moved to larger NBA arenas and selling out. This increased attention has also been linked to financial growth within the league.

More recently, Clark was involved in a contentious moment during a game on Wednesday night when she expressed frustration with a referee's call against her teammate Aliyah Boston, shortly after not receiving a foul call herself. Earlier in the same game, Clark made a layup while falling after contact with Kiah Stokes, but no foul was called on the play.
