Michigan Senate Democratic hopeful Abdul El-Sayed suggested in a May 2023 podcast episode that individuals seeking to achieve the American dream might have a better chance by moving to Canada.

On his podcast, "America Dissected," El-Sayed stated that economic data indicates a higher likelihood of achieving upward mobility in Canada. "If you want to achieve the American Dream, you should move to Canada because it's twice as likely there," he said, implying that opportunities in the United States are limited, with one's starting point often determining their endpoint.

This assertion contrasts with available economic data. As of 2024, the United States reported a median household disposable income of $66,155, significantly higher than Canada's $36,487, according to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development. The U.S. also demonstrates a lower unemployment rate, a higher gross domestic product per capita, and faster economic growth compared to Canada, despite its larger population.

In a separate instance, El-Sayed also defended Canada during a trade dispute with former President Trump, remarking, "If you’re starting a trade war with Canada [it] is cause you’re the asshole."

El-Sayed's campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment regarding these statements.
