The debate over the optimal travel strategy for the NFL's upcoming games in Melbourne, Australia, has reached the San Francisco 49ers' offensive line. Trent Williams, an All-Pro tackle, expressed his view that the differences in approach between his team and the Los Angeles Rams will ultimately be less significant than anticipated.
"To me it's tomatoes to tomato, so whatever you believe in," Williams told reporters. "The good thing about it is when you play a game, you’ve got a lot of adrenaline, so I don’t think that will be as big as a factor as people think."
The 49ers arrived in Melbourne over a week before their Week 1 matchup, aiming to allow players' bodies sufficient time to adjust to the new environment. In contrast, the Rams are scheduled to depart for Australia closer to the game date, a strategy they believe will help them overcome jet lag. Following the game, the Rams plan to return to Los Angeles promptly, with their approach centered on minimizing the time spent acclimating to the Australian time zone.
Williams shared his personal experience with adjusting to the local time, noting that he began to feel "normal" within 36 to 48 hours of arrival and felt fully acclimated after three to four days. The effectiveness of each team's chosen travel strategy will only become clear after the game concludes.
The historic Week 1 game is scheduled to be played in Melbourne on Friday. For viewers in the United States, the game will air on Thursday at 5:35 p.m. PT. Williams faces a significant challenge in the game, as the Rams boast a formidable defensive line, though the 49ers received news that defensive star Aaron Donald will not participate in the matchup.
