A family's electricity was cut off after a 12-year-old boy crashed his mother's Volkswagen Tiguan into a telegraph pole outside their home in rural Horton, Dorset. Lorraine and Matthew Tricksey were awakened by the loud crash around 2 a.m. on Friday, initially mistaking the sound for a disturbance outside.
Upon investigation, the couple discovered that a vehicle had collided with the telegraph pole, resulting in a loss of power to their residence. The young driver had traveled approximately 38 miles from Salisbury, Wiltshire, before the incident occurred.
"We woke up suddenly at 2 a.m., I think that was the impact," Mrs. Tricksey recounted. "We suddenly realised we were in complete blackness, which was because the telegraph poles had been knocked down and our electricity knocked out."
After police arrived, the Trickseys found live wires scattered around the property. They were reportedly surprised when officers contacted the boy's mother to collect him, rather than taking him into custody.
"They told us the boy was only 12. He's lucky he walked away from it," Mrs. Tricksey stated. "They got his mum to come and pick him up so he didn't even get taken off in the police car."
The wreckage of the Volkswagen Tiguan, along with damaged trees, remained at the property, blocking the couple's driveway and preventing them from leaving their home. They have not been informed when the debris will be cleared. The telegraph pole supplying their electricity has yet to be repaired, and they are currently relying on a temporary generator.
"We've still got the car stuck out there, it's a hell of a mess and blocking our driveway," Mrs. Tricksey said. "My husband asked the police if they could tidy up because we didn't want all the car parts and broken trees left there and they said we would have to contact Highways."
Mrs. Tricksey also expressed suspicion that the 12-year-old may not have been alone, suggesting others might have been involved. "We don't think the boy was on his own, we think somebody came out and picked up some people," she said. "Before the police arrived we heard another car come up screeching and there was shouting then it went quiet. The police said that was somebody trying to help but we don't think so." Dorset Police were approached for comment.
