Defenseman Zach Werenski has publicly stated his intention to remain with the Columbus Blue Jackets, directly addressing recent trade speculation. Both Werenski and Blue Jackets General Manager Don Waddell issued separate statements Wednesday to clarify the situation, confirming Werenski's commitment to the team.

Trade rumors intensified in the days leading up to Wednesday's statements, with Werenski being linked to the Tampa Bay Lightning and Toronto Maple Leafs. Sportsnet NHL insider Elliotte Friedman reported that an agreement was in place between Columbus and the Dallas Stars, which would have sent Werenski to Dallas in exchange for a package including defenseman Thomas Harley. However, reports indicated that Werenski, who possesses a full no-move clause, vetoed the proposed trade.

Waddell explained the team's process in a statement. "During those discussions, we talked about me exploring opportunities to move him now and we all agreed if there was a deal to be made that I would bring it to him," Waddell said. "We found something that would work for the club and took it to him. After some time and discussions with his family, Zach informed us that he didn’t want to leave Columbus."

Waddell added that Werenski "has invested a great deal in this organization and after coming close and falling short the past two seasons, his desire is to win here and get this team back into the playoffs."

Werenski echoed these sentiments, stating that he believed "everything got blown out of proportion." He affirmed his desire to win in Columbus, calling it his home for the past decade. "I love my teammates and coaches and I’m looking forward to doing everything I can to get us back in the playoffs to compete for a Stanley Cup. Don and I are completely aligned on that," Werenski said.

Werenski concluded the 2025-26 season with 22 goals and 59 assists for 81 points. He became the 10th defenseman in NHL history to lead his team in scoring for two consecutive seasons and matched Artemi Panarin's franchise record for assists in a single season. He also contributed an assist on Jack Hughes's gold medal-winning goal at the 2026 Winter Olympics.

The Blue Jackets are currently without a captain following Boone Jenner's departure to the Washington Capitals.
