Three-time Pro Bowl defensive end Za'Darius Smith is returning to the NFL, signing with the Atlanta Falcons for the 2025 season. His return comes after a year away from the game during which he experienced the profound grief of losing his mother, grandmother, and father in rapid succession.

Smith, 33, had stepped away from the league in October 2025 while with the Philadelphia Eagles, initially ready to end his playing career. However, the opportunity with Atlanta presented itself as he navigated his personal trials. "I was in a dark place," Smith told reporters on Wednesday. "This is my happy place. Come back, play football."

He described football as a crucial outlet during his period of mourning. "The joy that I get from winning and just getting sacks," Smith said, highlighting the positive aspects of returning to the sport. His mother, he shared, had always expressed a wish for him to play for the Falcons.

Smith visited with the Cleveland Browns before finalizing his deal with Atlanta, his seventh NFL team. His signing addresses the Falcons' need for pass-rushing reinforcement, particularly following a season-ending ACL injury to Jalon Walker and an eight-game suspension for James Pearce Jr.

Since entering the league in 2015, Smith has compiled a notable career record, including 343 total tackles, 70.5 sacks, 16 pass deflections, 10 forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries. As he approaches his 34th birthday near the start of the upcoming season, Smith has set a new goal of reaching 100 career sacks.

"I'm happy to be in Atlanta," Smith stated, looking forward to his new chapter on the field.
