New York Yankees third baseman Ryan McMahon was placed on the injured list due to a peritonsillar abscess, a condition that caused him significant pain and an inability to eat. The illness initially presented as an ear and throat infection before doctors identified the abscess, which required a procedure to drain.

Following the drainage, McMahon was advised to remain inactive for 72 hours. This inactivity, combined with the diagnosis, led to his placement on the 10-day injured list. The Yankees backdated his IL stint to Monday, making him eligible for activation next Thursday. Oswaldo Cabrera has been called up from Triple-A to fill his roster spot.

McMahon reported experiencing migraines and difficulty opening his jaw due to the pain. He indicated that he began feeling unwell the previous Monday but the symptoms worsened significantly around Sunday. He stated that he is no longer contagious and expects to be able to resume all activities after the initial 72-hour recovery period.

Manager Aaron Boone confirmed that the medical staff recommended inactivity for McMahon, which influenced the decision to backdate the IL placement. With McMahon unavailable, José Caballero started at third base on Wednesday, and Boone indicated that Amed Rosario is also expected to see time at the position as the Yankees face upcoming games against left-handed pitchers.
