The New York Yankees are set to start Elmer Rodriguez, the team's No. 3 prospect, on Wednesday against the Houston Astros at Yankee Stadium. This move comes as the Yankees' pitching rotation is facing significant injury challenges.

Rodriguez, 23, has made four MLB starts this season, posting a 4.76 ERA over 17 innings. His last major league appearance was on June 21, where he allowed three runs in four innings in a loss to the Cincinnati Reds. Despite a somewhat inconsistent performance in the majors, Rodriguez has demonstrated effectiveness in Triple-A Scranton, where he has a 2.59 ERA through 19 starts this year. Since his last MLB outing in June, he has pitched particularly well, recording a 2.14 ERA in nine starts at the Triple-A level.

The Yankees' rotation has been hit by injuries, creating an opportunity for Rodriguez to return to the big leagues. Ryan Weathers was recently placed on the injured list with a low-grade flexor strain, expected to sideline him for several weeks. Max Fried also landed on the injured list earlier this month with a bone bruise in his left elbow, though he is eligible to return as soon as Saturday.

Rodriguez's start is particularly significant given the Yankees' current standing. Entering Wednesday, the team was 3 1/2 games behind the Tampa Bay Rays for the division lead and only 1 1/2 games ahead of the Boston Red Sox for the top Wild Card spot. A crucial four-game series against the Red Sox is scheduled to begin this weekend.

The team faces a demanding schedule with no off days until September 3 and a doubleheader against the Red Sox on Saturday, further emphasizing the need for pitching depth. Rodriguez was acquired by the Yankees from the Red Sox in 2024 in exchange for catcher Carlos Narváez. He progressed through the minor league system from Single-A to Double-A and then Triple-A last year, spending this season exclusively at the Triple-A level.
