The New York Yankees have demoted shortstop Anthony Volpe to Triple-A, with manager Aaron Boone announcing Tuesday that Volpe will see time at both second base and shortstop. This development comes as the organization calls up highly-touted shortstop prospect George Lombard Jr. to replace Volpe.
Volpe's assignment to Triple-A occurred Monday night following the Yankees' 13-7 loss to the Cardinals. The decision to have Volpe play multiple positions marks a significant shift, as he has not played second base in the majors and had not previously taken reps at the position in the minors this season. He has only played two games at second base in his minor league career, both in 2021.
The organizational move follows confusion surrounding Volpe's willingness to play other infield positions if needed. Last month, Yankees broadcaster Michael Kay reported that Volpe had refused a minor league assignment to play second base, stating he would only play shortstop. Volpe publicly refuted the rumor, and Kay later walked back his statement the following day.
In 56 games this season, Volpe has struggled offensively, batting .240 with one home run and a .646 OPS. His defensive performance has also been a point of discussion since he joined the major league club in 2023, accumulating 56 errors compared to 53 home runs over his tenure.
