The American League secured an early advantage in the All-Star Game, with Cody Bellinger and Ben Rice of the New York Yankees combining for three runs in the first inning. The AL took a 3-0 lead against National League starter Cristopher Sánchez of the Philadelphia Phillies.

Sánchez encountered trouble after a leadoff single and a walk, followed by runners advancing on a grounder. With the bases loaded and two outs, Bellinger hit a single through the infield to score two runs. Two pitches later, Rice delivered another RBI single to the same area, pushing the AL's lead to three.

Sánchez had a strong regular season, allowing more than two earned runs in only four of his 20 starts. The game took place at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia following a pregame ceremony.
