Golfer Xander Schauffele has defended Northeast golf crowds, including those in the New York area, amid controversy surrounding spectator behavior at recent major championships. Schauffele's comments come after Wyndham Clark faced boos and jeers during his victory at the U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club.

Schauffele noted that Clark "handled it incredibly well" and used the negative feedback as motivation. "He kind of used that as fuel to play even better and sort of prove it to himself more than anyone else," Schauffele told Fox News Digital.

The U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills followed a contentious Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black, where New York golf fans drew criticism for their conduct. Schauffele acknowledged the "spicy" nature of the Ryder Cup atmosphere but stated his personal experiences in the region have been positive.

"I've always enjoyed playing anywhere near New York or in the Northeast. My experiences have been good," Schauffele said. "I know the Ryder Cup got a little spicy and there's obviously anticipation that, you know, fans are pretty, I like to call passionate. So, it is what it is."

Despite the criticisms, major championships are scheduled to return to the New York metropolitan area. Bethpage Black will host the PGA Championship in 2033, and Shinnecock Hills will again host the U.S. Open in 2036. Other upcoming events include the BMW Championship at Liberty National Golf Club in 2027, the U.S. Open at Winged Foot Golf Club in 2028, and the PGA Championship at Baltusrol Golf Club in 2029.

Wyndham Clark himself received praise for his composure and graciousness following his U.S. Open victory, addressing the crowd and posting a heartfelt message on social media.
