Chelsea's new manager, Xabi Alonso, is facing an unprecedented squad management challenge with 46 senior players on the books ahead of the 2026-27 season. The club's extensive roster has grown with recent signings, while only a few players have departed.
Since his arrival in July, Alonso has overseen several notable transfers, including the acquisition of Morgan Rogers for £117 million, alongside new additions like Marco Palestra, Danny Welbeck, Maxence Lacroix, and Jordan Henderson. However, the number of players leaving Stamford Bridge has been minimal. Confirmed departures include Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid and Tyrique George's permanent move to Everton. Loans have also been arranged for Alejandro Garnacho, Jesse Derry, and Kendry Paez.
This surplus of players presents a significant hurdle for Alonso, who must reduce the squad size while avoiding the creation of a "bomb squad," a term used last season for players deemed surplus to requirements and forced to train separately. Former manager Enzo Maresca reportedly implemented this tactic, with players like Raheem Sterling, Axel Disasi, Joao Felix, and Ben Chilwell among those considered outcasts.
The club's hierarchy faces a race against time to arrange further loans or permanent transfers before the Premier League season commences on August 24. Reports indicate that some positions have as many as eight players vying for a starting spot.
Several forwards have recently joined or returned to the club, increasing competition in that area. Nicolas Jackson is back from his loan at Bayern Munich, and Kazakh prospect Dastan Satpayev, signed in February 2025, is set to join the Premier League squad. Emmanuel Emegha has also arrived from Strasbourg and will compete with Welbeck, Marc Guiu, Liam Delap, and Joao Pedro.
Other players are also awaiting their competitive debut for Chelsea, including goalkeeper Mike Penders, who was on loan at Strasbourg, and Gabriel Slonina, who has been on multiple loan spells since joining in 2022. Valentin Barco, an Argentine midfielder, has also officially joined Chelsea after a complex transfer arrangement.
Alonso has also integrated several youth prospects into the senior fold during pre-season tours in Australia and Asia. With established stars involved in the World Cup, academy players such as Reggie Watson, Reggie Walsh, Ryan Kavuma-McQueen, Calvin Diakite, Olutaro Subuloye, Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli, Landon Emenalo, and Ted Curd were given opportunities to impress.
A further complication is the return of Mykhailo Mudryk, whose multi-year doping case has recently been resolved.
Despite the large squad, several players have attracted interest from other clubs. Chelsea is reportedly in talks with Como regarding Chalobah, and Crystal Palace and West Ham are interested in Disasi. David Datro Fofana is also unlisted and unattached to a senior squad role, while Napoli has shown interest in Benoit Badiashile. The club has also set a £120 million asking price for Enzo Fernandez, who has previously been monitored by Real Madrid. Mudryk has also reportedly drawn enquiries from three Premier League clubs.
