A warm-up jacket belonging to NBA legend Wilt Chamberlain, purchased for $3.07 at a Portland Goodwill store, has been sold at auction for $89,000. The memorabilia hunter who found the jacket, Quinn Brown, discovered its significance when Sotheby's authenticated it and matched it to photographs from the 1972 NBA Finals and the 1972-73 NBA season.
Chamberlain was named Finals MVP during the 1972 NBA Finals, and the 1972-73 season marked his final year in the league. Sotheby's had estimated the jacket's value between $150,000 and $250,000.
Brown, a teenager who has been thrifting and reselling items for years, made the significant find. The sale represents a profit of $88,996.93 on the initial purchase.
