The Chicago White Sox have acquired two-time All-Star pitcher Luis Castillo from the Seattle Mariners in a significant move ahead of the trade deadline. The transaction, confirmed Saturday, saw the White Sox send reliever Seranthony Domínguez, outfielder Nolan Jones, and prospect Boston Smith to Seattle.
Castillo, who finished fifth in Cy Young Award voting in 2023, has posted a 5.06 ERA with a 3-9 record across 20 starts this season. Despite his current struggles, his potential is viewed as a valuable addition to the White Sox's pitching staff, which ranks 16th in MLB with a 4.29 ERA, according to FanGraphs.
The White Sox will assume the remainder of Castillo's contract, which includes a salary of $22.75 million for the upcoming season and a vesting option for 2028 contingent on him throwing 180 innings in 2027. The team is currently leading the American League Central, one season after finishing with a 102-loss record.
Meanwhile, the Mariners will add Domínguez, who has compiled a 3.99 ERA in 43 appearances this season. Seattle is currently four games under .500 but remains within 2.5 games of first place in the AL West.
