Weston McKennie has become an indispensable, if unconventional, force for the U.S. Men's National Team (USMNT) during their World Cup campaign. The midfielder has started all three group-stage games, playing a crucial role in the team's performance.
McKennie's versatility is a key asset. While he has lined up at various positions for Juventus, his preferred and most impactful role is in attacking midfield. For the USMNT, coach Mauricio Pochettino has deployed him in this capacity, creating what Paraguay coach Gustavo Alfaro described as a midfield "pentagon" that has troubled opponents. This setup has seen McKennie partner with other midfielders, allowing him to influence both defensive and offensive phases of play.
"He's kind of a box-to-box player," teammate Sergiño Dest said. "He runs a lot, he helps a lot, he goes into every duel with full effort. That's really helpful for the team, because we need balance. We have a lot of different types of players and he's just a really important one."
His contributions have been evident in the team's matches. McKennie's combination play with Dest was notable in the win against Australia, and his passing was effective against Paraguay. Despite playing significant minutes, even in a seemingly less critical match against Turkey, he remained central to the team's efforts on both ends of the pitch. It could be argued he was unlucky not to register a goal or an assist in the group stage.
Beyond his on-field contributions, McKennie embodies a leadership role within the squad, particularly as one of the faces of the program's resurgence since failing to qualify for the 2018 World Cup. He earned his first cap in the game immediately following that disappointment. His influence extends to integrating new talent; he was part of the group that welcomed Folarin Balogun to the team.
"I think Weston has really matured," Balogun commented. "I think this is his best club season as well, and he's brought that form into the international level. I'm very, very proud of Weston and the strides he's made. He's definitely turned into more of a senior and leader within our team."
Balogun also highlighted McKennie's role in fostering team energy and comfort. "He continues to lead in different ways. He's somebody who makes the energy good within camp, who talks to everyone, makes sure everyone's comfortable. And on the pitch, you can see within the game we've played, he has a real impact. I hope, like Malik, he can continue this not just here, but carry it into the following seasons."
McKennie's personality is also a defining characteristic. He has been observed engaging in playful antics at the team's World Cup base, such as standing on bleachers during media sessions or playfully teasing teammates. "Good guy, kind of a clown," was how Max Arfsten described him. This mix of focused intensity on the field and lightheartedness off it contributes to his unique standing within the team.
