Golden State Warriors rookie Yaxel Lendeborg has publicly stated his intention to challenge Phoenix Suns player Dillon Brooks, declaring, "I’m finna give Dillon Brooks belt." Lendeborg, the No. 11 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, made the remarks during a recent Kick stream.
Brooks has cultivated a reputation in the league for his physical play and vocal on-court demeanor, often drawing criticism. Lendeborg's comments suggest a willingness to engage with this aspect of Brooks' game.
This is not the first time Lendeborg has expressed candid opinions since being drafted. He previously admitted to disliking Stephen Curry during his youth, explaining that his admiration for Kyrie Irving led to a rivalry with Curry. "It’s a full-circle moment for me. I’ve been saying this every time I get asked this question. In 2016, I’m a big Kyrie guy, so I used to hate Steph Curry," Lendeborg said. "So now that I’m actually going to be on the same team as him, play and actually learn so much from him, it means a lot."
Lendeborg will have an opportunity to test his assertion against Brooks when the Warriors face the Suns for the first time this season on October 24. The rookie has already made a positive impression on Warriors head coach Steve Kerr, leading the G-League team to an NBA Summer League championship where he recorded 21 points and 10 rebounds in the final game.
The Warriors are in a period of transition as they approach the later stages of Stephen Curry's career. The team has not made significant free agent acquisitions this summer. Lendeborg is expected to be a key contributor for Curry and the Warriors in the upcoming season.
