The Golden State Warriors' rumored efforts to acquire Anthony Davis appear to have concluded, with the Washington Wizards reportedly not entertaining trade offers for the star big man. The speculation, which gained traction after Draymond Green declined his player option, suggested a plan to reunite Davis with LeBron James, with whom he won a championship in 2020 while keeping Stephen Curry and Green in Golden State.
According to ESPN's Marc J. Spears, Wizards general manager Will Dawkins is a significant admirer of Davis and the team is not considering moving him this offseason. This stance diminishes a notable offseason rumor, which also involved the potential for Golden State to utilize Jimmy Butler's expiring contract in a deal. Butler's agent, Bernie Lee, has indicated that the Warriors intend to keep Butler and help him recover from an ACL injury.
Davis' future with the Wizards had been a subject of discussion since his acquisition from the Dallas Mavericks in February. His age, injury history, and substantial contract – with over $58 million due in 2026-27 and a player option for the following season – made him a potential trade candidate. Over the past five seasons, Davis has played in 243 out of a possible 410 games.
Despite these factors, Washington appears committed to building around Davis, Trae Young, and the No. 1 draft pick AJ Dybantsa. When healthy, Davis is regarded as one of the league's premier two-way big men, averaging 20.4 points, 11.1 rebounds, and 1.7 blocks per game last season while shooting 50.6% from the field.
While the pursuit of Davis seems to be over for the Warriors, their interest in LeBron James may continue, as betting markets now position them as frontrunners. However, the potential pairing of James and Davis in Golden State is no longer considered a likely outcome.
