Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive tackle Vita Vea has agreed to a one-year contract extension worth $30 million, with the full amount guaranteed. The deal will keep Vea with the Buccaneers through the 2027 season, and when combined with his current contract, he is set to earn $48 million over the next two years.

Vea had initially demanded a trade earlier in the summer after failing to reach an agreement on a contract extension before the start of training camp. He has established himself as one of the NFL's premier interior defensive linemen during his time in Tampa Bay.

Since joining the Buccaneers, Vea has recorded over 250 tackles, 35 sacks, three forced fumbles, and three fumble recoveries. Despite his high production, the timing of a new deal was complicated by his age, 31, as his career nears its later stages. This short-term extension provides Vea with additional security.

The Buccaneers now face a decision regarding the future of quarterback Baker Mayfield, who also did not have a contract extension finalized before training camp. Mayfield had set a deadline for the team to reach an agreement before the start of camp, and with that deadline having passed without a deal, his long-term status with the team remains uncertain.
