Enrique Macaya Marquez, a 91-year-old Argentine journalist, is set to cover his 18th World Cup. Macaya has attended every tournament since 1958, when he was a teenager and Pelé was a rising star. He believes Argentina has a strong chance of repeating their 2022 success.
When asked about the greatest player of all time, Macaya offers a nuanced view, emphasizing that direct comparisons across different eras are challenging. "There's no way to measure players throughout history," he stated. "Times have changed. Opponents have changed. Every player is unique."
He applies this same approach when discussing legendary Argentine players Lionel Messi and Diego Maradona. "It is very difficult to make a cold comparison," Macaya explained. "The opponents were different. The needs were different. The support from their team-mates was different. Each had their own life and their own history."
Similarly, he finds it impossible to directly compare the 1970 Brazilian team with the 1986 Argentine squad led by Maradona. "There is no way to compare them," he said. "The style is completely different."
Macaya's consistent presence at World Cups since 1958, observing the evolution of the game and its stars, has cemented his reputation for thoughtful analysis rather than definitive rankings. His perspective highlights the subjective nature of evaluating sporting legacies across diverse historical contexts.
