Usain Bolt, the former world's fastest man, has been registered as a player for Wythenshawe Vets, a non-League football team in the ninth tier of English football. The Jamaican sprinter, who holds the 100m and 200m world records, is a noted football enthusiast and Manchester United fan.
Bolt, 40, had expressed interest in joining the club earlier in the year, stating in January that he was ready to play if he could get into shape. The final paperwork has now been completed, listing him as a registered player for the south Manchester-based over-35s team.
Wythenshawe Vets has attracted attention for assembling a squad composed of former Premier League players. The team's roster includes Emile Heskey, Oumar Niasse, Antonio Valencia, Papiss Cisse, Stephen Ireland, Nedum Onuoha, Joleon Lescott, and Danny Drinkwater.
This move comes eight years after Bolt's attempt to transition to a professional football career. In 2018, he spent two months training with Australian side Central Coast Mariners. Although he scored two goals on his first start in a friendly match, the club was unable to secure financial backing for a professional contract, leading to his departure.
Bolt also reportedly turned down an offer from Maltese club Valletta and trained with Norwegian team Stromsgodset and German club Borussia Dortmund. He reflected on his professional aspirations, stating it was a good experience and he enjoyed being part of a team.
Wythenshawe Vets has gained a significant following through social media, drawing hundreds of spectators to their matches at Hollyhedge Park. Stephen Ireland, a long-term player for the team, has previously highlighted the benefits of the club for retired players, emphasizing fitness, mental well-being, and camaraderie.
