American ski athletes and their companions are seeking financial assistance after a fire destroyed their hotel in Chile, causing the loss of essential personal items including passports and ski equipment. The incident occurred on September 6, just days before a scheduled FIS Alpine Masters event.

Approximately 40 U.S. racers, coaches, and companions were staying at the Hotel Alto Nevados in preparation for the South American Masters Race when the fire broke out. Many individuals escaped the building with only the clothes they were wearing, leaving behind all their ski clothing and gear. Reports indicate that nearly half of those affected were unable to retrieve wallets, passports, cash, or medications. Some participants reportedly fled through smoke without shoes or coats.

To address the unexpected financial burdens and replace lost belongings, a GoFundMe campaign has been launched. The fundraising effort aims to help cover immediate travel expenses and the cost of essential items. Organizers stated that while some insurance may eventually cover certain costs, there will be significant losses for those affected.

The fire, first reported around 5 p.m., spread beyond the hotel, impacting other resort infrastructure. Local fire services responded with more than a dozen vehicles. The Nevados de Chillan ski resort confirmed the fire affected the Hotel Alto Nevados and the Plaza Otto area, causing significant material damage. Fortunately, no lives were lost.

In response to the incident, Nevados de Chillán announced the suspension of operations for its Ski Center and Thermal Water Park on September 7 to manage the emergency and assess damages. The resort expressed its deep appreciation for the community's understanding and support during the contingency.
