On the tennis courts of the North West of Ireland league, an unusual doubles partnership is proving to be a winning combination. David McCandless, 80, and his 14-year-old partner, Liam, teamed up two years ago and have since achieved a success rate of more than half of their league matches.

Their partnership, which McCandless described as coming about "purely by accident," has developed a strong synergy. "We started on court and it was a case of who is going to go where," Liam recalled. "Then after a couple of matches we started winning because we realised we got a system down and we realised we are a pretty good duo."

McCandless, who took up tennis at the same age as his partner and now plays up to five times a week, believes his extensive experience complements Liam's natural ability and coaching. "He got coaching from a young age which I never got," McCandless said. "I wouldn't have the same ability in playing the correct shots. I'm just self-taught." He added, "I do have a bit of experience and I do think that I can help him as regards how to move on the court at times. And he knows what I'm capable of and he covers for me at other times."

Liam spoke highly of his older partner, noting that McCandless brings considerable experience to the court. "He's a solid player and consistent and I've learned a lot from him playing in the league," Liam stated. McCandless, in turn, sees great potential in his young teammate, calling him "a very strong young junior and I think he will be a top class player."
