The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill announced Monday that Michael Lombardi, general manager for the Carolina football program, has been placed on paid administrative leave, effective immediately.
Lombardi, who is entering his second season with the Tar Heels, was one of Bill Belichick's first hires after the former New England Patriots coach moved to the college game. Lombardi is the highest-paid general manager in college football, earning $1.5 million annually from UNC.
The university's statement indicated that the action is standard procedure for personnel matters and stated that the leave "has no reflection on the merits." Leadership, staff, and student-athletes are prohibited from further comment on the situation.
Lombardi and Belichick have a long-standing professional relationship dating back to 1987 when Belichick was with the Cleveland Browns. Lombardi has previously been a vocal supporter of Belichick.
Last season, Belichick's first year at UNC, the team finished with a 4-8 record. The Tar Heels are scheduled to open their upcoming season against TCU on August 29. The departure of Lombardi comes as Belichick faces scrutiny weeks before the college season commences.
