AFL icon Tony Modra has been discharged from hospital and is continuing his recovery at home following a near-fatal truck accident in June. The 57-year-old sustained serious injuries when a fallen tree branch crashed through the windscreen of the truck he was driving.

Modra underwent two operations for fractures to his jaw, cheekbone, and eye socket. He was airlifted to Flinders Medical Centre after the accident, which occurred near his sheep and cattle farm approximately 90 kilometers south of Adelaide. At the time of the incident, Modra was in critical condition.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Modra expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support he and his family have received. "Over the past couple of weeks, I've been overwhelmed by the kindness and care shown to me and my family," Modra said. "I have left hospital to continue my recovery at home and only now starting to wrap my head around the incredible amount of support and well wishes that have come our way."

He also extended his thanks to those who provided assistance at the scene. "I remain deeply grateful to the members of the public who gave me vital first aid until professional help arrived, to others who offered reassurance, and to the emergency responders, medical staff and specialists who have cared for me since the accident," he stated. Modra added that his progress has been encouraging and requested that his privacy be respected during his rehabilitation.

Modra is widely regarded as one of the most spectacular players in Australian Football League history, having kicked 588 goals in 165 games for the Adelaide Crows and Fremantle Dockers between 1992 and 2001.

While hospitalized, Modra recorded a message for AFL fans ahead of a Showdown match between the Crows and rivals Port Adelaide Power, thanking supporters from both clubs and urging everyone to "drive home safe."
