Thekla successfully defended her AEW Women's World Championship against Starlight Kid at Forbidden Door on June 28, following the match with a post-bout attack that saw her rip off Starlight Kid's mask and taunt Stardom president Taro Okada.

The championship bout took place at the SAP Center in San Jose, California. Thekla, who won the title in February, had declared a challenge to Stardom and New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW) leading up to the event.

Starlight Kid answered the challenge, and the two competitors engaged in a hard-fought match. Starlight Kid targeted Thekla's knee in the latter stages of the contest, but Thekla persevered. The "Toxic Spider" ultimately retained her title after delivering two stomps.

Following the pinfall, Thekla's associates, Skye Blue and Julia Hart, joined her in the ring. Hart provided Thekla with scissors, which the champion used to remove Starlight Kid's mask. Thekla then spat in the mask and taunted Okada, who was in attendance, before hitting him with the mask.

Thekla has held the AEW Women's World Championship since February, having previously defended it against multiple opponents at Double or Nothing.
