The Sydney Swans, a top-tier Australian rules football team, are facing a significant crisis after five of their players were suspended for the remainder of the 2026 AFL season. The suspensions follow allegations of misconduct stemming from a night of celebrations after a victory over Essendon in Melbourne.

Players Isaac Heeney, Chad Warner, Nick Blakey, Riley Bice, and James Jordon were involved in the incident at the Pullman Hotel in East Melbourne. The situation escalated when women, reportedly lap dancers and topless waitresses invited to the players' room, alerted hotel staff early Monday morning alleging they had been mistreated. Police were called, and a formal complaint was made by one of the women on Tuesday.

Victoria Police's sex crimes squad is investigating the allegations, with detectives reportedly focusing on the actions of Isaac Heeney, who voluntarily spoke with police on Monday. Unverified claims of drug use, including cocaine and ketamine, have also surfaced in leaked messages circulating online, though the authenticity of these messages has been questioned due to inconsistencies.

The Sydney Swans club stated that their internal investigations indicated only the five players were present in the room in question. The club has condemned misinformation and is considering legal action. The suspensions handed down by the club are separate from the ongoing police investigation, and no charges have been laid.

The scandal has cast a shadow over the Swans' premiership aspirations, particularly as they were preparing for the finals. The team is currently second in the league standings, but the absence of key players is expected to significantly impact their playoff run. The club's CEO, Matthew Pavlich, expressed disappointment and emphasized the welfare of the women's AFL team, noting the incident has marred a significant upcoming match for them.

One of the women who provided a statement to police has reportedly received threats online from individuals allegedly unhappy about the scandal's impact on the team's finals chances. She expressed fear for her safety after her identity was leaked online.

The incident occurred at the Pullman East Melbourne hotel, located near the Melbourne Cricket Ground, which is set to host the NFL's first-ever regular season game in Australia on September 11.
