Sydney Swans forward Tom Papley has allegedly returned a preliminary positive result for methamphetamine in a roadside drug test.
Police stopped the 30-year-old player for a license check on Lang Road in Centennial Park on Monday morning. During the stop, Papley reportedly underwent a random drug test. A second sample has been collected for analysis, with results not expected for approximately four weeks.
Papley was also issued a court attendance notice for allegedly driving with a suspended license due to an unpaid parking fine. He has not been charged with a drug-driving offense.
The Sydney Swans confirmed the incident in a statement Wednesday evening, noting that Papley had informed the club immediately. The Australian Football League (AFL) has also been notified.
"Papley immediately advised the club regarding this matter and the club subsequently informed the AFL," a Sydney Swans spokesperson said. The club stated it would not comment further until the police investigation concludes.
Papley, who has played for the Swans since 2016 and appeared in the 2016, 2022, and 2024 grand finals, was not involved in a separate alleged incident at the Pullman Hotel in East Melbourne earlier this season, which is currently under police investigation.
