Tennis player Jessica Pegula was caught on a hot microphone during training sessions for the WTA Finals in Indian Wells, making critical remarks about 19-year-old rival Mirra Andreeva. Pegula, 32, referred to Andreeva as a "diva" who "needs to be humbled" and stated she had "lost respect" for Andreeva's coach, Conchita Martinez.

Andreeva has developed a reputation for an intense on-court demeanor. This year at Wimbledon, she reportedly smashed rackets, argued with officials, declared "I quit," and left the court in tears after a second-round loss. The French Open also saw instances of her displaying frustration, including hitting a ball into the crowd and exchanging words with spectators.

Pegula, the daughter of oil and gas tycoon Terry Pegula, also commented on Andreeva's temper, suggesting the young player "needs to be humbled" and "put in her place." Pegula was recorded saying, "If I was a coach, and my girl just played four great games, and you're up 4-0, and you're mad at me throwing balls at me, first of all, that's so disrespectful... But she can't. Conchita pokes her and eggs on her behaviour."

Pegula, who reached the final of the US Open in 2024, has herself faced scrutiny, with some suggesting her family's wealth contrasts with her pursuit of a Grand Slam title. She previously told Daily Mail Sport that she had a normal upbringing and that her family's wealth did not significantly impact her until later in her life. Her father, Terry Pegula, built his fortune through oil and gas investments and is also an owner of the Buffalo Bills NFL team and the Buffalo Sabres NHL team.

Andreeva has acknowledged her temperamental outbursts, stating, "I feel like it's not the best way to handle yourself, but once in a while it really helps to get mad at yourself and get it done." She has also cited Serena Williams's composed demeanor during matches as something she aims to learn from.

The two players have not yet competed against each other, but could potentially face off in the ongoing tournament.
