Sunderland has finalized the acquisition of Malick Fofana from Lyon for a reported £30 million, beating Crystal Palace to the signing. The 21-year-old forward has agreed to a long-term contract with the Stadium of Light club.
Fofana joins Sunderland on deadline day and is set to strengthen the team as they prepare for their first European competition since 1973. "Malick has all the attributes to thrive in the Premier League," stated Sunderland's Director of Football, Florent Ghisolfi. "He is a player with huge potential and Sunderland AFC will provide him with the right environment to continue to develop and prosper."
Ghisolfi added that Fofana, who operates on the left wing, will enhance the versatility of the club's existing wide players. "He operates off the left and will complement the versatility of the other wide men we have at the club, who can play across both flanks," he said. "We are delighted to welcome Malick to the club and look forward to supporting him as he takes the next steps in his career."
Fofana began his professional career at KAA Gent before moving to Lyon in 2024. His transfer marks Sunderland's fifth signing of the summer, following the additions of defenders Thomas Meunier and Dayann Methalie, and midfielder Jules Ahoka. The club secured these signings after finishing seventh in their return season to the top flight.
The Black Cats recently secured a victory against Fulham on Sunday, a week after their season-opening loss to Ipswich in the 2026-27 campaign.
