Jacob Tobey has returned as the San Antonio Spurs' play-by-play announcer, less than two months after his termination following allegations of an affair with a relative of a Spurs player. Tobey announced his return on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday, acknowledging the need to rebuild trust within the organization and the wider community.
"I thank the Spurs for allowing me time to step away to sort out issues in my personal life," Tobey wrote. "I understand that I will have to regain trust within the organization and across our community, a community where I will continue to be present with enthusiasm and passion. I believe I have the best job in the world and am thrilled to be able to continue as the team’s play-by-play announcer."
The situation arose in July when an Instagram Story, purportedly from Tobey's account, accused him of cheating on his girlfriend with Loren Waters, the sister of Spurs guard Lindy Waters III. The post included images that appeared to show Tobey and Waters kissing.
Tobey's dismissal sparked debate, with some critics arguing that his personal conduct should not have resulted in the loss of his broadcasting job. Media personality Collin Cowherd questioned the decision on his show, suggesting it was unusual to be fired for infidelity involving a girlfriend, rather than a spouse. Former Spurs player Danny Green also commented on the matter on his podcast, "No Fouls Given." Green stated that while he respects the Spurs' organizational standards, he did not believe Tobey's personal decisions warranted termination.
