Spain's head coach, Luis de la Fuente, acknowledged the team's strong performance but emphasized the need for continuous improvement, stating, "There is always room for improvement, because every upcoming match will be very difficult."
Portugal, despite a 1-2-0 record in the group stage, demonstrated resilience in their 2-1 Round of 32 win against Croatia. The victory included Cristiano Ronaldo's first World Cup knockout round goal and a late header from Gonçalo Ramos, with a Croatian goal disallowed by VAR.
This encounter marks the third World Cup meeting between Spain and Portugal. Spain won the 2010 match 1-0, and the 2018 group stage fixture ended in a 3-3 draw, with Ronaldo scoring a hat trick in the latter. Ronaldo, who played in both previous matchups, will once again be a focal point as Portugal seeks to overcome Spain.
The full rosters for both teams have been released. Spain's squad includes goalkeepers like Unai Simón and David Raya, defenders such as Pau Cubarsí and Aymeric Laporte, midfielders like Gavi and Rodri, and forwards including Mikel Oyarzabal and Lamine Yamal.
