South Africa and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Jayden Adams, 25, was found dead on Saturday morning in Cape Town. His passing comes just weeks after he featured twice for his country in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The cause of death remains unconfirmed.

Viral Celebration Footage

Footage has emerged from South Africa's locker room following their 1-0 victory against South Korea, a win that secured their advancement to the last 32 of the tournament. In the video, while teammates are engaged in jubilant celebration, Adams is seen sitting apart, appearing to be in a quiet moment of reflection. He had been substituted into the match shortly before its conclusion.

Personal Tragedies

Adams' presence at the World Cup followed personal loss. He was mourning the death of his grandmother, Marianna Adams, who passed away two weeks before the tournament began. He remained on international duty in the United States for her burial on June 27. Additionally, he was still grieving the loss of a close friend, South African youth footballer Oshwin Andries, who died in February 2023 after being stabbed.

His girlfriend, Aqueelah Adendorf, who is left to mourn with her five-year-old daughter, Allaia, expressed her pride in Adams' World Cup selection in a resurfaced social media post from May 27. She wrote about his hard work, sacrifices, and perseverance, calling him an inspiration.

"I don’t think you even realize how inspiring you are," Adendorf wrote. "You deserve every single moment of this because I’ve seen how much you’ve worked for it. Through every challenge, you never gave up on your dream, and that alone makes me so proud to stand beside you and support you through it all."

Adendorf has since thanked the public for their "kind condolences and messages of support" during this difficult time.

Tributes and Condolences

The South African Football Players Union (SAFPU) announced Adams' death, calling it an "immeasurable loss to his family, teammates, clubs, the football fraternity and country at large." The union extended its deepest condolences to Adams' family, his clubs Mamelodi Sundowns and Stellenbosch FC, the Bafana Bafana team, and all those he touched.

"South African football has lost a gifted player, a proud servant of the game and a young life that still had so much to offer," the SAFPU stated. "May his soul rest in eternal peace."

On social media platform X, the union added, "Death has cruelly stolen one of our own. It has robbed our nation of a remarkable footballer, but it will never take away the legacy Jayden Adams leaves behind. We will forever remember his humility, his extraordinary talent and the pride with which he represented South Africa."
