The Socceroos' departure from the World Cup has been met with widespread criticism directed at coach Tony Popovic, with fans and experts pointing to controversial goalkeeper and lineup decisions as key factors in their penalty shootout defeat.
Pundits and supporters have questioned Popovic's choice to start Patrick Beach, a 22-year-old goalkeeper with limited international experience, over captain Maty Ryan for the crucial penalty shootout against Egypt. Beach had performed admirably throughout the tournament after being introduced in the initial match against Turkiye, making several key saves that kept Australia in contention.
Despite Beach's solid performances, he was substituted just before the penalty shootout commenced. Mark Milligan, speaking on SBS, expressed bewilderment at the decision, stating, "We have to be honest with the young ones who have come through, it was a massive, massive call to leave Matty Ryan out when he did. Maty Ryan did nothing to warrant that. Coming off the back of a fantastic season." He added that Beach's presence had significantly impacted the tournament's trajectory for the team.
When Maty Ryan entered the goal for the shootout, he was unable to make a save, and the team ultimately fell short. The former Arsenal goalkeeper's performance in the shootout, including his reaction to Mohamed Salah's panenka penalty, drew particular scrutiny. Milligan noted that while Harry Souttar and Lucas Herrington missed their penalties, Ryan's inability to save any spot-kicks was a significant factor.
Milligan also criticized Popovic's broader squad selection and tactical choices throughout the tournament. "Looking back in the tournament, two big decisions against Turkiye that paid off. For me unfortunately the decisions made after that probably didn't come to life like he would have hoped," he commented.
Social media commentary echoed these sentiments. One user, Steve Ireland on X, questioned the decisions regarding penalty takers, asking, "Complicated penalty shoot out sending Souttar/Herrington to take pens? What for? Because they wouldn’t [have] been able to research them? So dumb." Another user lamented the substitution of Beach, writing, "Feel so sorry for Patrick Beach. He was having the game of his life and this f*****r Popovic takes him off for a guy who saved none of the penalties and dived weird on the Salah one."
Some fans went as far as to call for Popovic's dismissal. One widely shared post stated, "That was a Masterclass on a manager losing you the game. Failed to start our best lineup again, took our best attacking players off with 15 to go & then brought on a keeper who hasn’t seen a single second of gameplay. Popovic has to go."
