Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani is exhibiting a noticeable improvement in his mental state as he approaches his return to pitching, according to teammates Mookie Betts and Miguel Rojas. The two players discussed Ohtani's renewed spirit on the "On Base with Mookie Betts" podcast, noting a stark contrast in his demeanor when he is able to be on the mound.
"Shohei is a different guy when he’s able to put his glove on and go out there and throw," Rojas said. "I really believe it makes him happy. And if he’s happy, and he’s in a good headspace, he’s going to help the team."
Ohtani had been sidelined from pitching since early July due to a knee injury. His return to the mound seems to have revitalized him, with Rojas observing Ohtani frequently handling his glove and preparing to pitch. "What I see in Shohei right now is that he’s happy because he’s able to put that glove [on] again," Rojas added.
Betts echoed these sentiments, stating, "I really believe it makes him happy. And if he’s happy, and he’s in a good headspace, he’s going to help the team."
Ohtani recently participated in a simulated 30-pitch live batting practice session on Saturday, marking the first time he has faced hitters since July 3. Social media footage captured Ohtani laughing heartily on the mound during the session, further indicating his joy in returning to pitching.
"He can be himself!" Betts exclaimed regarding Ohtani's current state. The Dodgers have also seen recent success, holding a 7-3 record in their last 10 games, which has contributed to a more positive team atmosphere.
