Alan Shearer has voiced a new level of confidence in England's prospects at the current World Cup, citing a recent team performance as the best he has witnessed in his lifetime.
England secured a crucial victory, with key players Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham scoring. However, Shearer highlighted the contributions of the entire squad, noting that players beyond the established stars stepped up significantly in the last round. He described the team's performance as "pretty much complete," especially considering the challenging conditions, including altitude and a hostile atmosphere, and playing with ten men.
"I don't think I've ever witnessed togetherness or team spirit like that - to get a result in such a tough scenario," Shearer commented. He also pointed to the team's post-match celebrations, including a prank involving John Stones, as evidence of strong camaraderie, with the manager, Thomas Tuchel, also being an integral part of the team's unity.
Shearer acknowledged that the upcoming match against Norway in Miami presents a different challenge, but he is reassured by England's demonstrated readiness to adapt. Unlike teams with a fixed identity, such as Spain's possession-based style or Argentina's reliance on Lionel Messi, Shearer sees England's strength in their adaptability. "Instead, we are adaptable. So far, we have just played the game in front of us, changing our approach depending on whoever we are up against and how the game is going," he stated. This flexible approach has been instrumental in their progress to the last eight, and Shearer believes it should remain their strategy moving forward.
