San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan has shut down any possibility of a reunion with wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, who has filed for NFL reinstatement. Shanahan stated Wednesday that he has "no expectation" of Aiyuk returning to the team and has "moved on mentally." This comes despite the 49ers' current depth issues at the receiver position.
Aiyuk, who is reportedly working with new agent Drew Rosenhaus, is scheduled to report on Friday. However, the organization does not plan to keep him. While general manager John Lynch had previously adopted a more conciliatory stance on a potential return for the receiver, Shanahan's position has remained firm.
A History of Discord
Aiyuk's tenure with the 49ers has been marked by a contentious contract dispute, an off-field reckless driving citation, and a period of estrangement from team medical staff during rehabilitation. Following the voiding of his contract guarantees and subsequent sidelining by the team, Aiyuk engaged in public criticism of the organization on social media. He reportedly made disparaging remarks about team personnel and coaches, and drew significant backlash for posts that appeared to mock a car accident involving Shanahan.
Before the recent fallout, Aiyuk was a key offensive player for the 49ers. Drafted 25th overall in 2020, he developed into the team's primary perimeter receiver, achieving consecutive 1,000-yard seasons in 2022 and 2023. In 2023, he earned Second-Team All-Pro honors, recording 1,342 receiving yards and playing a crucial role in the 49ers' Super Bowl LVIII appearance. Over his five seasons with San Francisco, Aiyuk amassed 294 receptions for 4,305 yards and 25 touchdowns.
Aiyuk's contract status includes guarantees that have been voided, amounting to a $12.35 million dead-cap hit for the 49ers. This situation clears the way for him to explore opportunities with other teams.
